  4.     No one would dream of tampering with the majestic music of
  5. Britain's national anthem, familiar to Americans as the tune of
  6. My Country, 'Tis of Thee. But the words are another matter, in
  7. particular the assertive second verse, which calls on the deity
  8. to scatter the monarch's enemies, in phrases much admired by
  9. Queen Victoria: "Confound their politics/ Frustrate their
  10. knavish tricks." Last month the Church of England's Liturgical
  11. Commission suggested substituting a kindlier version, written by
  12. a London shoemaker in 1836, for use when the anthem is sung at
  13. Remembrance Day services for the dead of the two World Wars.
  14. Sample lines: "Lord, make the nations see/ That men should
  15. brothers be."

  17.     But the idea has provoked heated objections, judging by
  18. letters to the editors of the London Times. One writer points
  19. out that communism has collapsed peacefully in Eastern Europe in
  20. answer to just such prayers.
